Canada unveils C$1.5 billion aid for sectors hit by US tariffs

6 May 2026 14:56 reported by Gianna Chen

A A A
The Canadian government has announced a C$1.5 billion aid package to support domestic industries affected by US tariffs on steel, aluminum, and copper products.

The package includes a C$1 billion concessional financing program from the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), and an additional C$500 million through the Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI).

The funds aim to help manufacturers and SMEs manage financial pressures, diversify markets, and boost productivity.

While the aid offers short-term relief, industry insiders say Canada still needs successful trade talks with the US. The European market may bring opportunities, but many remain cautious about upcoming negotiations.
