US customs processes over $35 billion in illegal tariff refunds

According to a court filing on Tuesday, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued US$35.46 billion in refunds, including interest, as of May 11. This payout relates to tariffs implemented by President Trump last year, which were later ruled illegal.

CBP executive director Brandon Lord said that the agency validated nearly 87,000 applications covering 15.1 million entries. Currently, 8.3 million shipments have reached final calculation.

These reimbursements result from a Supreme Court decision in February finding that Trump exceeded his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Although a recent trade court ruling also found a subsequent 10% provisional global tariff illegal, the Trump administration is appealing.

Major importers now anticipate increased profits as CBP addresses up to US$166 billion in potentially refundable collections.
