Nippon Steel positions Slovak unit as European hub

15 May 2026 16:35 reported by Bob Liu

A A A
Nippon Steel said it will directly acquire U. S. Steel Košice, s.r.o. (USSK) on October 1, 2026, and rename the Slovak steelmaker as Nippon Steel Slovakia s.r.o. (NSSK).

The restructuring will shift USSK from being a wholly owned unit of United States Steel Corporation (U. S. Steel) to a direct subsidiary of Nippon Steel, giving the Japanese parent greater control over its European strategy and operations.

Since acquiring U. S. Steel in 2025, Nippon Steel has been working to strengthen USSK’s competitiveness through closer cooperation in technology, human resources, as well as sales and procurement networks.

The company said USSK will serve as the core hub for its European operations, with the aim of improving regional profitability and accelerating growth.
