South Africa seeks to prevent closures of ArcelorMittal's long steel plants

5 Mar 2025 16:27 reported by Lily Nguyen

The South African government is urgently engaging with ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) in a last-ditch effort to prevent the shutdown of critical steel mills. Despite rescue talks breaking down, the government continues to negotiate to avert a significant industrial crisis.

AMSA recently announced plans to completely halt operations at its long steel plants during the second quarter of the year, a move that threatens approximately 3,500 direct jobs. The company had initially planned to close its facilities by the end of January but extended the deadline by one month to complete existing orders.

The potential closure underscores the mounting pressures on the country's manufacturing sector and the ongoing struggle to maintain industrial production in a challenging economic environment.
