UK resumes duty-free exports of category 17 metal products to EU

The UK steelmakers will resume again to export certain steel products duty-free as the European Commission reinstated the UK’s country-specific quota (CSQ) for category 17 metal products. There will be 27,000 tons for the quota allowed to the EU, including angles and steel profiles without additional duties.

After the summit in May, the EC agreed to restore the quotas for British steel to historic levels after those are cut in March. The Trade Minister also said the duty-free measure will help the UK steel industry as the government previously intervened to save jobs at British Steel and reached a deal with the US to cut duty on the UK’s steel products.

The UK government will also take measures to help the industry, like the Industry Change Plan, which includes £500 million for green steel production in Port Talbot, cutting electricity costs, and stricter procurement rules. Those are believed to help the trade defense measures.
