ArcelorMittal South Africa considers closure of Long Steel Business

3 Sep 2025 13:41 reported by Joy Liu

ArcelorMittal South Africa is taking steps toward the potential closure of its Long Steel Business after failing to find a sustainable solution to secure its future. The company confirmed that, despite extensive efforts with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), the government, and other stakeholders, no viable option has been reached to extend the business beyond its current deferral period, which ends on September 30, 2025.

As a result, the Newcastle blast furnace has been put on temporary care and maintenance. The company is now preparing for the potential closure of its Long Steel Business, which includes communicating with employees and issuing notices under the Labour Relations Act if necessary.

The Long Steel Business will continue to operate until shortly after the deadline, and the Flat Steel Business remains fully operational.
