Baker Hughes: US rig counts up, Canada’s down for week ending May 1

According to the report from Baker Hughes, in the week ending on May 1, 2026, the US rig count was up by three to 547 units compared to the previous week.

Among them, the number of drilling rigs for natural gas rose by one to 130 units, that for oil also hiked by one to 408 units, and miscellaneous rigs increased by one to nine. The total number had a year-on-year decline of 37 units, or approximately 6%.

During the same period, Canada’s rig count dropped by seven to 123 units from the previous week, including 49 gas rigs (down by three week on week), 74 oil rigs (down by four week on week), and zero miscellaneous rigs (unchanged week on week). Canada’s rig number slid by three units compared to the same period a year ago.
