Finland's Arctial aluminum smelter targets first production in H2 2029

The Rio Tinto-backed Arctial aluminum smelter in Finland is targeting first hot metal production in the second half of 2029, pending a final investment decision in 2027.

The project aims to produce 610,000 metric tons of aluminum per year, which would increase European production levels by 20%.

Europe produced 7.1 million tons of aluminum in 2025, including 3.9 million tons from Rusal. Exports from the Gulf region to Europe have been restricted due to the Middle East conflict disrupting bulk shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Arctial would be the first primary aluminum development in continental Europe in more than 30 years. However, it would not be sufficient to fully meet the region’s import demand.
