British Steel got the largest-ever order with West Africa to supply 244,000 rail steel sleepers to upgrade a freight railway line at a bauxite mine in Guinea.

The company said the steel sleepers produced at its Scunthorpe plant are 100% recyclable and provide perfect technical solutions for rail operators. Compared to wooden sleepers traditionally used in Africa, steel sleepers are stronger and more durable.

Guinea’s bauxite supply was estimated to account for more than 25% of the total in the world. Therefore, the upgrade of railway lines is needed for the continuously increasing export capacity.
