RUSAL planning restart of ALSCON smelter in Nigeria

RUSAL, a global leading aluminum supplier in Russia, and the Nigerian government are considering whether to restart the Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON), which was suspended due to losses ten years ago.

The ALSCON smelter had an annual production capacity of 193,000 tons. It produced 22,000 tons of aluminum in 2012, accounting for only 11.4% of its year capacity. The smelter was suspended in early 2013 due to the lack of reliable and continuous gas supply and serious losses at the plant.

However, RUSAL didn’t provide further details about the plan.

RUSAL owns 85% of the ALSCON smelter, and the Nigerian government holds the remainder.
