South32: Mozal Aluminum smelter’s condition improves

20 Dec 2024 15:50 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
South32, a mining and metals company headquartered in Australia, announced that alumina stocks at its Mozal Aluminum smelter in Mozambique are expected to be rebuilt in the coming days if trucking conditions remain stable.

Operations were disrupted earlier due to post-election civil unrest, which caused road closures and hindered raw material transport.

South32, holding a 63.7% stake in the Mozal Aluminum smelter, had recently withdrawn its production forecast for the Mozal Aluminum smelter following protests linked to disputed election results in October.

While the situation in the region has improved, South32 cautioned that potential unrest after the Mozambique Constitutional Council announces election results on December 23 could again disrupt operations.
