Australian government plans A$2 billion to promote green aluminum industry

22 Jan 2025 15:53 reported by Yolanda Wang

A A A
Australia's Labor government has pledged A$2 billion in production credits to help the country's four aluminum smelters switch to renewable energy by 2036. The country's four aluminum smelters are operated by Rio Tinto and Alcoa.

Aluminum production relies heavily on coal, and green aluminum is often referred to as metal produced using solar, wind, or hydropower.

The Australian government aims to achieve 82% of its electricity supply from renewable sources by 2030. The country has pledged to invest more than A$40 billion in wind, solar, and battery projects, but renewable energy currently stands at 40%, far short of the target.
