Argentina worries about US aluminum tariff policy

25 Feb 2025 17:04 reported by Vicky Wang

Argentine President Javier Milei is expected to discuss US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports during a visit to Washington, where he will also meet with Tesla CEO Elon Musk and the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Aluar, South America's largest aluminum exporter, recently announced an investment of more than US$600 million to build a wind farm in the province.

Ignacio Torres, governor of Chubut Province, where Aluar is located, said that Argentine officials have discussed the issue of aluminum tariff increases with the Minister of Trade and the US embassy in Argentina.

As the US imports less than 4% of aluminum from Argentina, Torres said it is illogical for the US to raise aluminum tariffs from 10% to 25% without exceptions, and stressed the need to defend Argentina's job market and industry.
