Norwegian aluminum producer Norsk Hydro has begun construction of a EUR 180 million recycling facility in Torija, Spain, aimed at processing postconsumer aluminum scrap.

The plant, located 50 miles from Madrid, will produce 120,000 metric tons of extrusion-grade ingots annually, complementing Hydro’s nearby Azuqueca plant to achieve a combined capacity of over 200,000 metric tons. 

Equipped with advanced sorting technology, the facility will recycle up to 70,000 metric tons of scrap yearly to create high-recycled-content alloys for industries like automotive, construction, and energy.

Hydro emphasizes the plant’s role in boosting European industrial competitiveness, saving energy, and reducing emissions. The company also calls for closing loopholes in the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism to further support the plant’s success.
