Mexico's aluminum industry chamber calls for urgent talks with US on tariffs issue

21 Mar 2025 13:19 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Canalum, Mexico's national aluminum industry chamber, urged the government to speed up negotiations with US President Trump to avoid a 25% tariff imposed on 33% of aluminum products not covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Mexico exports around US$2.5 billion worth of aluminum products to the US each year. If the 20% tariffs are imposed, it will have a serious impact on the Mexican aluminum industry.

The US has extended the implementation of tariffs on Mexico and Canada until April 2. The chairman of Canalum believes that Mexico still has a chance to seek exemptions and gain a relatively competitive advantage compared to their countries, but it all depends on the speed and effectiveness of negotiations with the US government.
