Namibia made progress towards its green hydrogen goals on March 12, with HyIron’s Oshivela plant producing the first batch of green hydrogen in Southern Africa.

Powered by a 12MW electrolyser from China’s Peric Hydrogen Systems, the plant operates on a renewable energy-based infrastructure. Initially, the hydrogen will be used for direct reduced iron (DRI) production, targeting an annual production of 15,000 tons. The plant runs on a 25MW solar farm and 13.4MW battery storage, and it is planned to produce five tons of green iron per hour, with further expansion in the future.

Supported by Namibia’s national green hydrogen program and more than 60 local small and medium-sized enterprises, the project was completed in under a year. HyIron plans to scale up production capacity and aims to achieve a cost-neutral Green Deal for Namibia, Europe, and other regions.
