The US Department of Commerce (USDOC) issued a notice adding 25% duties on imported aluminum cans and canned beer, effective after midnight Friday. These tariffs apply to imports from all countries and update the aluminum product list Trump originally announced in February. The tariff codes showed new duties will be applied to empty aluminum cans and beer made from malt, while previously listed items like aluminum foils and sheets remain unchanged.

The Aluminum Association expressed its support for the move, which would address concerns over Mexican brewers and can makers using Chinese aluminum can sheets for their beer exports to the US. The association also noted that aluminum can ends aren’t yet included and encouraged industry participants to request their addition. The USDOC is expected to confirm a process for such requests by mid-May.

Additionally, Trump announced a 10% universal tariff on nearly all imported goods from all countries, effective Saturday, with higher rates for China, Japan, and the EU coming April 9. Certain goods, such as copper and lumber, are exempt, and prior tariffs on steel, aluminum, cars, and automotive parts remain unchanged.
