ArcelorMittal, the second largest steelmaker in the world and also the largest in Europe, is urging the European Commission to postpone its decarbonization policy until after 2030, as it is not economically viable for the steel sector at the current moment.

Aditya Mittal, the company's CEO, stated that his company has reduced absolute emissions by almost 50% in 2024 compared to 2018, and has invested US$1 billion in decarbonization projects. However, Mittal believes it is getting clear that the iron production methods will only be economically viable after 2030.

Furthermore, the CEO urges the European Commission to translate the Steel and Metals Action Plan into concrete measures without delay.
