Rio Tinto and AMG Metals & Materials (AMG M&M), an energy transition solutions provider promoted by the founders of Greenko and AM Green, have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to partner in developing an integrated low-carbon aluminum project in India powered by renewable energy.

The potential project includes a primary aluminum smelter with an annual capacity of up to 1 million tons and alumina production of up to 2 million tons annually. A study will first evaluate a primary aluminum smelter with an annual capacity of 500,000 tons.

Rio Tinto aims to expand its low-carbon aluminum production in emerging markets, while AMG M&M seeks to provide low-carbon metal for various industries. The study will examine renewable energy solutions with Greenko and alumina supply options with Rio Tinto, as well as cost-effective smelting technologies.
