Vestas to use ArcelorMittal's low-carbon steel for German wind farm project

28 Apr 2025 14:42 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Vestas, a wind turbine manufacturer, has chosen ArcelorMittal to supply its XCarb® recycled and renewably produced heavy plates for turbine towers at Vattenfall's Nordlicht 1 offshore wind farm in Germany. This was the second project between the two companies using this lower-emission steel.

The Nordlicht 1 project will feature 68 Vestas V236-15.0 MW wind turbines, with turbine towers partially built using ArcelorMittal's XCarb® steel, which has a 66% lower carbon footprint compared to conventional blast furnace route heavy plates due to its high scrap content and renewable energy production.

The 1GW wind farm’s construction is planned to begin in 2026, wind turbine installation in 2027, and full operation in 2028, generating enough power for 1.6 million German homes annually. This collaboration showed the growing use of sustainable steel in major energy infrastructure projects.
