Alcoa sees strong Q2 orders despite US tariffs

US aluminum producer Alcoa reported a robust order book for the second quarter and has not yet seen a decline in orders due to US tariffs, according to CEO William Oplinger. However, he noted that the recent power outage in Spain posed risks to Alcoa's San Ciprián aluminum complex.

While Alcoa anticipated the US tariffs on aluminum imports from Canada would cost it around US$90 million in the second quarter, Oplinger said the company supported a competitive US manufacturing environment, suggesting Canadian aluminum access is the best way. He stated the US faces a 4-million-ton annual aluminum deficit and lacks bauxite resources, making near-term domestic smelter construction impractical and costly.

Regarding the power issue in Spain, Alcoa is assessing potential risks and damage at its restarting San Ciprián smelter.
