Guinea revokes some of mining licenses, including bauxite, amid growing resource nationalism

22 May 2025 11:06 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Guinea's government has revoked the licenses of 46 to 53 small-scale mining companies, a move signaling growing resource nationalism in the military-ruled nation. The affected permits cover bauxite, gold, diamond, and graphite operations, though none are significant producers in Guinea's mining sector, dominated by big international companies.

Mining analysts said this is a warning to larger operators in the world's second-largest bauxite producer. While consistent with regulations, the revocations implied that the government intends to enforce development agreements.

Guinea, holding the largest bauxite reserves in the world, exported around 146.4 million tons of bauxite last year. Major producers are projected to exceed 200 million tons in output this year, remaining unaffected by the license revocations.
