US industry urges Senate to extend hydrogen tax credit

9 Jun 2025 15:19 reported by Margaret Yeh

Former US President Joe Biden signed climate legislation called the Inflation Reduction Act, which provided tax credits to hydrogen producers for projects that begin construction before 2033. However, House Republicans proposed cutting the 45V credit for any project that starts construction after 2025, and the Senate is now debating its version of the bill.

In a letter, around 250 companies and labor groups called for top US Republican senators to extend the construction deadline to December 31, 2029, so that hydrogen projects can still qualify for the tax break. The Business Council for Sustainable Energy and the Nuclear Hydrogen Initiative signed the letter as well.

The letter stated that preserving the 45V credit would retain billions of dollars in domestic manufacturing investment and create more jobs in construction, technology, and operations.
