EU opens additional consultations on expanding CBAM and anti-circumvention measures

3 Jul 2025 15:37 reported by Margaret Yeh

A A A
The European Commission has opened consultations on expanding the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The goal is to gather feedback on possibly widening its scope, addressing circumvention, and refining rules for the electricity sector.

CBAM may cover more processed products to prevent carbon leakage, where production shifts abroad or imports rise from countries with weaker climate rules. New anti-circumvention measures are being considered, such as stricter reporting on production methods and product makeup.

The consultation runs from July 1 to August 26 and invites input from companies, associations, NGOs, academic institutions, public authorities, and trade unions.
