Egyptalum to build solar plant for decarbonization in aluminum production

15 Jul 2025 11:57 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Aluminium Company of Egypt (Egyptalum), the only primary aluminum manufacturer in Egypt, planned to construct a 1,000-megawatt (MW) solar power station at its Nag Hammadi aluminum facility, partnering with Norwegian provider Scatec.

A power purchase agreement was signed for the project, which involved a US$563 million investment from Scatec.

The station will be built in two phases for a period of more than 24 months, each with a 500-MW capacity, with storage batteries of up to 200 MW.

This investment is to reduce Egyptalum's operating costs, increase production efficiency, and cut carbon emissions. Besides, it will enable Egyptalum to meet the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) requirements, ensuring continued exports.
