Tata Steel UK has commenced construction of a new electric arc furnace (EAF) at its Port Talbot facility in the UK, a £1.25 billion project for decarbonization. Once operational, the EAF is projected to reduce Port Talbot’s carbon emissions by around 90%, equivalent to 5 million tons of CO2 per year, contributing a 7-8% reduction to the UK’s total industrial carbon output.

This investment, which includes £500 million from the UK government, aims to secure high-quality sustainable steel and support 5,000 direct jobs in the UK steel industry.

The new EAF, expected to be commissioned by the end of 2027, will have an annual steel capacity of 3 million tons, primarily melting UK-sourced scrap steel.

The project reflects Tata Steel UK’s ambition to achieve net-zero steel by 2045, representing a key step in the nation's green industrial strategy.
