Australia's steelmaker Alter Steel announced a partnership with Danieli, the Italian engineering company, to invest US$750 million to build a green steel plant in Pinkenba, Queensland, which is expected to be put into production by the end of 2027.

The plant will use Danieli's MIDA QLP system with Digimelter technology, with an annual production capacity of 500,000 tons, mainly producing reinforcing steel products for construction. The new technology can reduce energy consumption by 75% and carbon emissions by 80%, with carbon emissions per ton of steel being only about 0.37 tons, and can use 100% renewable energy.

Alter Steel stated that this is the first large-scale new steel plant in Australia in 40 years.
