Norway's Hydrogen partners with Sweden's GreenIron to expand fossil-free metal production

25 Aug 2025 10:58 reported by Eva Chen

A A A
In October 2024, Norwegian Hydrogen AS and Sweden's GreenIron H2 AB reached an agreement to supply green hydrogen produced at its Hellesylt plant in Norway to GreenIron's first large-scale direct reduction reactor in Sandviken, Sweden.

GreenIron's process uses green hydrogen to reduce metal oxides, generating zero carbon emissions and enabling truly fossil-free metal production. Norwegian Hydrogen will provide production and hydrogen infrastructure expertise to ensure the technology can be implemented on an industrial scale.

Recently, the two companies signed a strategic agreement to construct green hydrogen plants at multiple industrial parks, operating them in parallel with direct reduction reactors. They plan to scale up fossil-free metal production by combining green hydrogen supply with direct reduction technology.
