Ansteel Group launches green hydrogen steel trial operation at Bayuquan plant

On August 28, a new hydrogen-based steel production trial line began continuous operation at Anshan Iron and Steel Group's (Ansteel Group) Bayuquan plant. This new method uses green hydrogen made from renewable electricity to replace traditional coke in the iron-making process, achieving near-zero carbon emissions.

Li Can, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said this technology offers a low-carbon solution for the steel industry, helping China seize the leading edge of hydrogen metallurgy technology.

The trial line, developed by Ansteel Group and 64 relevant units, uses all domestically produced equipment. It has already successfully created direct reduced iron (DRI) with a high metallization rate of 95%. The next step is to scale up the project to produce 500,000 tons per year.
