Maaden & Emerge partner on off-grid solar project to decarbonize bauxite mining operations in Saudi Arabia

Maaden Bauxite and Alumina Company (MBAC), a subsidiary of Maaden (Saudi Arabian Mining Company), has signed a 30-year power purchase agreement with Emerge, a joint venture between Masdar and the EDF Group, to supply renewable energy to the Al Baitha Bauxite Mine in Saudi Arabia. This partnership is to reduce the mine's carbon footprint and advance Saudi Arabia's energy transition goals.

Emerge will develop an off-grid solar facility featuring an 8 MWp solar photovoltaic array and a 30 MWh battery energy storage system, ensuring a 24/7 power supply.

The project is expected to generate around 17,300 MWh of electricity annually and avoid approximately 13,800 tons of CO2 emissions each year. This initiative will enable the mine to operate almost entirely on clean energy, marking a major step toward sustainable mining operations.
