PGS selects thyssenkrupp nucera for 1.4 GW green hydrogen project in Australia

Australia’s Progressive Green Solutions (PGS) chose thyssenkrupp nucera as the preferred supplier of electrolyzers with a total capacity of 1.4 GW for the Mid-West Green Iron project. The initiative aims to produce 7 million tons of green iron pellets annually, with half converted into 2.5 million tons of Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) in Western Australia’s Mid West region near Geraldton.

Powered by renewable energy and local magnetite iron ore, the project will use green hydrogen to cut CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to traditional steelmaking. First exports are planned for 2029, with long-term targets of 30 million tons of pellets and 10 million tons of HBI annually.

Thyssenkrupp nucera will provide its modular 20 MW scalum® alkaline water electrolysis units. The project, currently in early planning, is subject to a final investment decision and is not expected to impact thyssenkrupp nucera’s earnings before the fiscal year of 2026-27.
