India plans Rs 5,000 crore green steel mission

The Indian government is planning to launch a Rs 5,000 crore mission aimed at helping steelmakers adopt cleaner technologies. The plan will offer concessional loans, risk guarantees, and financial tools to support both large and small steel producers in creating sustainable or green steel.

The scheme will primarily focus on secondary producers, who account for nearly half of India's steel output, but will also include primary producers using blast furnaces.

This plan is part of the Indian government’s broader strategy to decarbonize the steel industry by encouraging the use of better raw materials, alternative fuels, and renewable energy. The government is also considering a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for green steel and may mandate public procurement of sustainable steel.
