SHS Group signs decade-long deal with Verso Energy for renewable hydrogen supply

The SHS, Stahl-Holding-Saar Group (SHS Group), which includes Dillinger, Saarstahl, and ROGESA, signed a ten-year agreement with France’s Verso Energy for the supply of at least 6,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually beginning in 2029.

The deal marks a milestone for the group’s Power4Steel decarbonisation project and underscores closer Franco-German cooperation in industrial hydrogen. It follows a tender process launched by ROGESA in March 2024 to secure regional hydrogen supplies.

Verso Energy will provide Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) hydrogen from its Carling Hydrogen Next Generation project in Carling, France, supported by an electrolyser investment exceeding EUR100 million. The 6,000 tons are an initial step, with SHS targeting annual consumption of up to 120,000 tons as it aims to cut emissions by 55% by the early 2030s.
