Outokumpu, Europe's largest stainless steel producer, recently announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Boston Metal, a company specializing in innovative energy processes, to jointly advance the research and development and application of carbon-free metals.

Under the agreement, the two parties will initiate a joint development program to incorporate Outokumpu's high-quality chromium materials into Boston Metal's patented Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) technology.

This innovative, electrically powered process effectively eliminates carbon emissions from traditional smelting and, when combined with renewable energy, enables zero-carbon production.

Outokumpu will provide chrome oxide and chromium raw materials from its mine in Kemi, Finland, to support the development of an inert anode supply chain, further improving recycling rates and production efficiency. This collaboration not only focuses on the stainless steel industry but also expands to critical metals required by high-end industries such as defense and aerospace.

Boston Metal has already launched its first commercial plant in Brazil, producing high-value metals such as niobium and tantalum, and plans to expand its modular MOE technology to large-scale applications such as steel. The cooperation between the two parties is seen as an important step in promoting green steel, and also presents a new opportunity for the global metal industry to move towards low-carbon transformation.
