US aluminum group slams Canada's new subsidy fund

15 Sep 2025 15:04 reported by Joy Liu

The American Primary Aluminum Association (APAA) is criticizing a new US$5 billion Canadian government fund, which will give hundreds of millions to its aluminum sector, according to Canada's Industry Minister Mélanie Joly.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) previously found that Canada's aluminum industry received over $850 million of subsidies from the government.

APAA President Mark Duffy said that this is just more of the same from Canada, claiming Canadian subsidies have reduced the number of US aluminum smelters from 23 to four since 2000, while Canada has maintained its 10 smelters.
