India's Vedanta to lower coal dependence with renewable energy transition

The chief executive officer of Vedanta Resources, Deshnee Naidoo, said that the company now uses coal as its majority energy source, which is around 70% for its mining business. However, it plans to reduce coal’s share to 50-60% over the next few years by increasing the use of renewable sources.

According to Naidoo, the low-carbon products at present account for not more than 20% of the company's total production output, but Vedanta aims to expand this share. Vedanta is shifting to green energy, which includes solar, wind, and hybrid power, to meet its decarbonisation goals. It also produces low-carbon aluminum and zinc by using renewable power and hydrogen-based processes.

This Indian multinational mining company is also developing similar energy transition initiatives in its overseas businesses. In Zambia, it plans to build a 300-megawatt power unit that will use half coal and half renewables.
