Centrica and HiiROC, with support from the Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC), completed the UK’s first trial of hydrogen injection into a gas-fired peak power plant. The test took place at Centrica’s Brigg Energy Park in North Lincolnshire, supplying electricity directly to the grid.

Using HiiROC’s Thermal Plasma Electrolysis (TPE) technology, hydrogen was produced on-site and blended at a 3% ratio for a one-hour run. The trial showed existing gas infrastructure can operate with a hydrogen blend to deliver low-carbon electricity, advancing Centrica’s decarbonization efforts.

Centrica Energy Storage + Managing Director Martin Scargill said the trial highlights hydrogen’s role in supporting the UK’s Clean Power 2030 targets. HiiROC Chief Executive Tim Davies called the achievement a step toward delivering affordable, clean hydrogen. NZTC Chief Operating Officer Rebecca Allison added that the project demonstrates hydrogen’s critical role in enabling industrial-scale decarbonization.
