Tomago Aluminium sets new global benchmark for current efficiency

Tomago Aluminium, the largest aluminum smelter in Australia, has achieved a new global benchmark for Current Efficiency (CE%) with its AP18 technology. The company reached a historic, sustained CE% above 95%, a record for the site and for its AP22 technology, which operates at 220,000 amps.

According to Grant Farrow, Process Superintendent – Electrolysis, such sustained performance is extremely rare and reflects years of disciplined process control and improvement. The record-breaking performance was driven by three key factors, including higher anode quality, stronger work quality standards, and continuous improvement by the LMO process team.

Consistent training, procedural discipline, and a focus on pot stability and bath chemistry were crucial in reducing variability and improving cell performance. These enhancements have led directly to this significant leap in energy efficiency.
