During a climate leaders' summit hosted by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced China’s national climate plan for 2035 in a live video message from Beijing.

Under the plan, China aims to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 7%-10% from peak levels and increase its installed wind and solar capacity to more than six times that of 2020. The country also intends to raise the share of green energy in its domestic mix to over 30%.

Xi also mentioned that some countries are wavering in the global clean energy transition and urged developed nations to take the lead in international climate cooperation.

While US President Donald Trump said in his September 23 speech at the U.N. General Assembly that climate change is a “con job,” criticizing both EU nations and China for promoting renewable energy technologies. However, Guterres noted that since the Paris Agreement was adopted in 2015, global warming projections have declined from an estimated 4°C rise to 2.6°C. He called for new 2035 plans that go further and faster to meet global climate targets.
