SSAB Zero becomes world's first IEA-compliant near-zero CO2e steel

SSAB, a Sweden-based steel company, announced that its SSAB Zero™ steel, produced with hydrogen-reduced iron from HYBRIT® technology, is the world’s first near-zero CO2e steel to meet thresholds set by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the First Movers Coalition (FMC).

The commercially available steel is produced at SSAB's Iowa facility using recycled scrap metal, fossil-free electricity, biocoal, and renewable natural gas. By adding hydrogen-reduced iron to the manufacturing process, this steel now qualifies as near-zero.

This achievement was revealed at GE Vernova’s wind supplier conference. The steel will be used in GE Vernova's onshore wind towers across the US, supporting GE Vernova's commitment to decarbonizing its value chain and fulfilling its FMC steel purchasing commitment.
