The UK government recently announced that it has signed contracts with Eni, a CO2 transport and storage operator, for two innovative commercial projects to capture and store carbon dioxide emissions.

These are the first two key projects in Eni's carbon transport and storage network in Liverpool Bay. They involve world-leading carbon capture technology and will be used at the Padeswood cement plant in North Wales (Heidelberg Materials) and the Protos waste-to-energy plant (Encyclis) in Ellesmere Port in northwest England.

The projects are expected to capture 1.2 million tons of CO2 annually. This follows an additional £9.4 billion in support from the UK government in June.

Eni stated that the contracts with the government will help fill the capacity of the Liverpool Bay transport and storage system and demonstrate that close collaboration between government and industry can build a strong CCS value chain.
