Mercedes-Benz is cutting the CO2 footprint of its new electric CLA by 40% by integrating low-carbon aluminum into production.

The automaker partnered with Norsk Hydro to source the metal, which is made using renewable energy and contains 25% recycled scrap. Its production generates only 3 kilograms of CO2 per kilogram of aluminum, significantly below the global average of 16.7 kilograms.

Mercedes-Benz executives said that sustainability is central to producing luxury vehicles and that the high price of low-carbon aluminum does not discourage customers.

Using low-carbon aluminum is part of the company's commitment to reducing emissions across its entire EV portfolio. Norsk Hydro reports growing demand for environmentally friendly raw materials despite the challenging aluminum market.
