The Spanish Ministry of Industry and Tourism approved a preliminary resolution to grant EUR600 million in subsidies to energy-intensive companies to compensate for indirect CO₂ emission costs.

According to a ministry report, Arcelor Mittal will receive EUR76.1 million, with EUR42.2 million allocated to its Asturias divisions and EUR29.2 million to the Basque Country. Other beneficiaries include Celsa (EUR28.1 million), Ferroglobe (EUR21.7 million), Sidenor (EUR16 million), Global Steel Wire (EUR14.2 million), and Siderúrgica Sevillana (EUR11.1 million).

The ministry stated that the subsidies target industrial sectors at risk of carbon leakage under European and national regulations. Since 2019, the Spanish government has provided around EUR2 billion in direct support for energy-intensive industries through various assistance programs. Last year’s budget for indirect CO₂ compensation was EUR300 million.
