Century Aluminum halts partial production at Iceland aluminum smelter due to equipment failure

22 Oct 2025 16:16 reported by Joy Liu

Century Aluminum announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Nordural Grundartangi, had to temporarily cease production on one of its two potlines at the aluminum smelter in Grundartangi, Iceland. This was caused by an electrical equipment failure.

No one was injured, but the incident has resulted in a temporary production reduction of about two-thirds at the facility. The other potline remains fully operational.

Century Aluminum is assessing the impact, determining a timeline for replacement equipment, and working to minimize disruptions for customers and suppliers.

The company expects that the resulting financial losses will be covered by its property and business interruption insurance. It will offer an update on November 6 during its quarterly earnings conference call.
