ABB, a Swedish-Swiss technology company, has secured an electrification contract with SSAB, a Swedish steel company, to deliver the main electrical infrastructure for the steelmaker’s new fossil-free mini-mill in Luleå, Sweden.

The order covers the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of the main power distribution system for the site, which will utilize energy-intensive processes such as electric arc furnaces.

The new facility will replace SSAB’s current steelmaking operations in Luleå and is scheduled to begin producing fossil-free steel at the end of 2029. SSAB expects the new mill will reduce CO2 emissions by 2.8 million tons annually, a 90% reduction that is expected to cut Sweden’s total CO2 emissions by 7%.

ABB’s involvement will provide the foundation for stable and efficient fossil-free steelmaking.
