Industry leaders urge GHG protocol revisions to accelerate renewable gas adoption

7 Nov 2025 15:15 reported by Stanley Wang

A A A
Ahead of COP30 and the 10th anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement, 32 major industrial and utilities companies joined the coordinators of the Let Green Gas Count campaign in urging revisions to the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol to better encourage the use of renewable gas. The GHG Protocol, widely used for emissions accounting and followed by policymakers and 97% of Fortune 500 companies, is currently undergoing a standards review that could influence long-term emission reduction strategies.

The appeal follows a February 2025 call from more than 200 industrial representatives for urgent updates supporting green gas adoption. The letter aligns with the Brazilian COP Presidency’s pledge to expand renewable fuel production by 2035, as well as recent global policy efforts to support biogas. Although renewable gases are recognized for their role in decarbonization, only a small share of their production potential is currently utilized. The signatories call for the Protocol revision to recognize market-based certification tools and to provide interim guidance before the review concludes in 2028.
