Deutsche Bahn (DB) ordered its first rails made from green steel. DB InfraGO signed a supply contract with Saarstahl Rail for about 1,000 tons of low-emission steel rails, equal to roughly 22 km of track. The first deliveries will be used in North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland.
The steel is produced at the Saarstahl Ascoval plant in France using electric arc furnace technology, which melts old rails and scrap instead of using iron ore and coal. This process can reduce CO2e emissions by up to 70 percent compared to traditional blast furnace production, cutting emissions by around 1,800 tons for the 1,000-ton order. DB aims to be climate-neutral by 2040.
