Feralpi Stahl & JUWI explore renewable power supply for Riesa steel plant

Feralpi Stahl and project developer JUWI are examining whether locally generated wind and solar power could supply the energy-intensive Feralpi’s steel plant and rolling mills in Riesa in the future. A newly signed memorandum of understanding launches a feasibility study to evaluate if JUWI’s planned wind farms in Central and Northern Saxony are technically and economically viable for meeting part of the plant’s electricity needs.

The assessment will consider two planned wind farms with five and six turbines, each capable of producing around 20 million kilowatt-hours per year. The Riesa plant, operating since 1994 and employing about 850 people, is one of Saxony’s major industrial energy consumers. Feralpi aims to reach climate neutrality by 2050, with Managing Director Uwe Reinecke highlighting the cooperation as a potential step toward producing green steel.

JUWI, active in Saxony since 2011, expects the first wind farms in Central Saxony to be grid-connected from 2029. Both companies emphasize that regional electricity generation could reduce energy imports and support local industry.
