PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum), a state-owned aluminum company in Indonesia, is planning an expansion to curb the nation's reliance on imports, which currently account for 54% of its aluminum supply.

Melati Sarnita, the President Director of Inalum, announced the goal to commission a new aluminum plant in West Kalimantan by 2029. The smelter is expected to have an annual production capacity of 600,000 metric tons, which will be added to Inalum's current output of 275,000 tons.

The project requires an estimated investment of nearly $2.5 billion and 1.2 gigawatts of power. Inalum is currently seeking strategic partners, including the Danantara sovereign wealth fund.
