WV Stahl seeks competitive electricity prices to protect EAF producers & jobs

According to Market Steel, the German Steel Association (WV Stahl) urged improved conditions for manufacturers operating electric arc furnaces (EAFs), most of which are medium sized companies.

WV Stahl noted that EAFs account for 30% of Germany’s steel production and provide around 32,000 direct jobs. Association president Gunnar Grebler said EAF steelworks form the backbone of the circular economy and play a key role in industrial decarbonization. However, he warned they face uncompetitive electricity prices, strong import pressure, and historically low demand, putting investments, locations, and tens of thousands of jobs at risk.

WV Stahl also cited uncertainty over high quality scrap supply. The industry is calling for measures including competitive electricity prices, reduced grid fees, fair EU trade rules, secured scrap availability, and stronger domestic production.
